Your personal story is the most powerful Get Out the Vote tool you have.
It’s true — research shows that when your friends and family hear from you about why you vote, they’re more likely to vote too. Your voice has power — and that’s why we’re encouraging you to record a short video to bring your own authentic voice to our movement for civic participation in Indian Country.
Here are some example videos. Aim for a simple 30 – 45 second video!
How to do it:
- Find a calm place to film with a non-distracting and quiet background.
- Stabilize and frame your shot: ask a friend to film you or set up your phone to self record. Try and keep the frame focused on your face, with the shot framing you from the chest up. Shoot vertically, not horizontally
- Start by introducing yourself! What’s your name, and where do you live?
- Share your story: why is voting meaningful to you? Consider:
- Having a future for your kids and grandkids
- Taking action on climate change
- Protecting our land and water
- Voting is a way to express your values
- Share your plan to vote, and how you’ll be helping your friends or family vote, too. For example:
- I’m committing to recruiting 10 friends and family to vote with me
- On Election Day, I’ll be driving an Elder to a polling place
- Finally, let people know why you encourage them to vote, too. It can be as simple as:
- Our future depends on it
- Our vote is our voice
- You’re done! Look at your video. Are you happy with it? If you’re not, you can always reshoot it.
- Share your video!
- Post it to social media.
- Submit it to the Native Civic Power Initiative Resource Hub by emailing it to: support@nativecivicpower.org
